Accepted Materials
What is Accepted?
Cardboard – Please flatten
Comingle Material – Items collected together
- Plastics # 1 and #2 (PET & HDPE) Make sure items are marked # 1 or #2. Plastics #3 - #7 are NOT acceptable.
- Aluminum & Tin (rinsed cans of aluminum, steel, bimetal or tin. Please no pie pans or aluminum foil.
Glass – Bottles & Jars (clear & colored). Please discard lids, caps, corks and rinse the container. (Glass is not accepted at the Goshen Center).
Mixed Paper – Includes receipt paper, computer paper, magazines, catalogs, bulk mailings, carrier stock paper, newspapers, cereal boxes (no plastic liner). Please do not place waxed paper, used tissues or paper towels in the container.
Scrap Metals – Any metal item(s) except: dishwashers, barb wire. Please be sure to check any appliances to ensure they are empty.
Household Waste – Accepted in the compactors at all staffed collection centers.
Bulky Items – Mattresses, box springs, sleeper sofas.
Tires – Light auto/truck tires 32” diameter & off rim only. (Accepted at the following locations: Fairfield, Fancy Hill, Goshen, and Natural Bridge staffed centers & Blue Ridge Resource Authority).
Please remember that it is important for recyclers to ensure collection containers hold only the items permitted for recycling.
What is NOT Accepted?
NO Aluminum Foil
NO Food Containers
NO Shredded Paper
NO Plastic labeled #3 up to #7
NO Plastic Bags (return to retailer)
NO Styrofoam or Bubble Wrap
NO Paint Cans (look for local events)
Battery Recycling
- Lithium and NiCad batteries are accepted for recycling at all of the County Staffed Collection Centers. Please remember to tape all connectors off before placing into the recycling buckets.
- Alkaline (Dry Cell A, AA, AAA, C, D, 6 & 9 Volt) batteries are no longer recyclable. These batteries can be placed into your bagged household trash.
Paints
Latex paints should be in a dry form (no liquid) add kitty litter, sand, or mulch to the container for absorption of the liquid. After all the liquid is absorbed/dry, please replace the lid on container and discard into your bagged household trash.
Oil Based paints are not accepted. Please dispose of these items at our Household Hazardous Waste Collection events held each Spring and Fall.
Household Hazardous Events
Rockbridge County attempts to hold at least one Household Hazardous Event each year, typically one of the last weekends of September or the first weekend of October. The county will advertise the event in the News-Gazette the weeks leading up to the event. Please see below for materials that are accepted at these events:
Pesticides, Herbicides, Fuels, Used Oil, Cleaners/Bleaches, Lithium and NiCad Batteries (will not be accepted if connectors are not taped), Antifreeze, Mercury (Household Products Only), Solvents, Sealants, Oil-Based Paints Only.
Materials that are not accepted at the events:
Fluorescent Bulbs, Propane and Camping Tanks, Tires, Alkaline Batteries, Latex Paints
**Bulbs and Tires can be taken directly to the Landfill**
Items Accepted by Blue Ridge Resource Authority (BRRA):
Fluorescent bulbs, lead batteries, electronics recycling (e-waste), televisions and monitors, construction and demolition debris, furniture, mattresses, bathtubs, grills and other bulky items, bicycles, tires
ALL COMMERCIAL/CONTRACTOR WASTE MUST BE TAKEN TO THE BRRA LANDFILL
ALL BRUSH AND WOODY DEBRIS MUST BE TAKEN TO THE LANDFILL.
