Notice - Rockbridge County Residents

Rockbridge County will begin the implementation of the Solid Waste Management Strategic Plan with all the changes below, effective March 1, 2017. The County contracted SCS Engineers to provide professional services for development of the Solid Waste Management Strategic Plan, which can be viewed online at:

NEWHours of Operation - The Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors has revised days and hours of operation for the Staffed Collection Centers (Fairfield, Sallings Mountain, Goshen, Greenhouse Road, Murat and all future sites) and adopted a new schedule for holiday closures. The changes include addition of Sunday afternoon hours for staffed centers and closure on Tuesdays. Effective March 1, new hours of operation will be:

Staffed Centers:
Sunday 1 PM – 6 PM
Monday 7 AM – 6 PM
Tuesday CLOSED
Wednesday 7 AM – 6 PM
Thursday 7 AM – 6 PM
Friday 7 AM – 6 PM
Saturday 7 AM – 6 PM

Holidays for Staffed Collection Centers (not including the Landfill Center):
Independence Day (July 4th)
Thanksgiving Day
Christmas Eve (Close at Noon)
Christmas Day

Landfill Collection Center Hours:
Monday – Saturday 7 AM – 3:30 PM


NEW - Staffed Centers to Take Bulky Items

Effective March 1, all Staffed Collection Centers will accept large and bulky mattresses, box springs, sectional sofas, sleeper sofas, recliners, or any acceptable waste too large to be placed into the compactor. These will be placed into a separate “Bulky Items” container placed on-site.

Brush will no longer be accepted at any collection center and must be directly delivered to the Rockbridge County Landfill for disposal.

NEW – Unstaffed Centers to Be Closed in a Phased Approach

In accordance with the Strategic Plan, the County will discontinue service and maintenance of 22 unstaffed collection centers located throughout the County based on a phased approach and implementation of at least two new centers. Listed below is a schedule of currently planned closures, with suggested staffed collection centers to use. Additional closure dates will be advertised as construction of new staffed collection centers is completed.
